Invisalign clear aligners are often called “invisible braces”. They work by gradually moving teeth into position with a series of custom made, clear plastic aligners.
Here’s how it works:
Consultation and Assessment
First you’ll have a consultation with an Invisalign certified dentist or orthodontist to see if Invisalign is right for you. They’ll assess your teeth and may take X-rays, photos and impressions to get a full picture of your teeth.
Customised Treatment Plan
If Invisalign is right for you, the dental professional will use 3D imaging technology to create a digital model of your teeth. This model is used to design a series of aligners that will move your teeth into position.
The digital model will simulate the stages of your smile transformation so you can see the results before you even start treatment.
Your Custom Aligners
Once the plan is approved, a series of aligners is made for you. Each one is custom made using medical grade, BPA free plastic so they fit comfortably over your teeth.
Wearing and Changing
You’ll wear each aligner for about 1-2 weeks, 20-22 hours a day, only removing them to eat, drink (anything other than water), brush and floss.
Each aligner is slightly different and is designed to move the teeth a little more each time. This gradual pressure moves the teeth closer to their ideal position.
Check-ups with Your Dentist or Orthodontist
You’ll see your Invisalign provider every 6-8 weeks to check progress and get your next aligner.
Your dentist may make minor adjustments to keep everything on track and address any issues that come up.
Treatment Completion
Treatment time varies but is usually 6-18 months. Each aligner brings the teeth closer to the desired position.
Once the last aligner is used, your treatment is complete!
Post-Treatment Care
After completing your Invisalign treatment, you may need to wear a retainer for some time to maintain the results. This can be either a clear plastic retainer or a fixed wire retainer bonded to the back of your teeth.
It’s important to continue practicing good oral hygiene and visit your dentist regularly for check-ups and cleanings. This will help ensure that your teeth stay in their new positions and maintain their straight, beautiful appearance.
Remember, even though Invisalign aligners are removable, it’s crucial to wear them as directed by your provider for optimal results. Skipping days or not wearing them enough can delay progress and prolong treatment.
Once the final aligner is worn, most patients will wear retainers (usually at night) to keep the teeth in place.
